AI citation gap checkerare you named, cited, both or neither?
Run up to ten real buyer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Record whether each answer names your brand and whether it cites your website, plus the main site it cites. The checker gives your mention rate, citation rate, gap per platform, your position and the test to run next.
| Buyer question | ChatGPT | Gemini | AI Mode | AI Overview |
|---|
For each cell choose what the answer did, and paste the main domain it cited if it was not yours. Choose "No AI answer" when Google shows no AI Overview. Run each question twice if you can, because answers change between runs.
What the four positions mean
Named and cited
Protect it. Find the pages behind it, keep them current and recheck monthly.
Named, not cited
Other sites supply the facts. Inspect the pages cited instead and fix access or depth on your own matching page.
Cited, not named
Your page is used but your brand is not. Make the page say clearly who you are and what you offer.
Neither
Check crawler access first, then which sources appear, then widen the question set.
The method behind this tool is explained in our mention to citation gap guide, with the evidence from the Semrush AI Visibility Index and other studies.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What does the AI citation gap checker measure?
It counts, for the questions and platforms you log, how often an answer names your brand (mention rate) and how often it cites your domain (citation rate). It shows the gap between the two per platform, places you in one of four positions and lists the third party domains cited most often, so you know which pages to inspect.
Does the tool query ChatGPT or Google for me?
No. You run the questions yourself and record what you see. That keeps the tool free, private and accurate to your market and language. Everything stays in your browser unless you choose to send the result to us for a review.
How many questions should I check?
Start with ten questions that real buyers ask and run each one on every platform, twice if you can. Ten questions give a direction, not a benchmark. Expand to 25 to 50 questions before you treat the result as a baseline for your category.
What should I do with the result?
Follow the position the tool gives you. If you are named but not cited, inspect the pages cited instead. If you are cited but not named, check how your page describes your brand. If you are neither, check crawler access first. Our mention to citation gap guide explains each case in detail.
