Claude SEO: be a source Claude can reach and trust

Anthropic documents three crawlers for Claude, each with a different job. Getting those settings right is the first step to being found. Clear pages and consistent brand facts do the rest, without any promise from us.

Platform facts are dated October 2026 and taken from Anthropic's support documentation.

Claude is used a lot by professionals who research a vendor before they buy. That makes it worth testing, even if its traffic share is smaller than some other engines. We say this plainly: we do not publish a market share number here, because we have no source for one that we can check.

Our post on how to get cited by Claude covers the thinking. Below is the practical side.

What Anthropic says

The three Anthropic crawlers and what they do

Anthropic's support article on web crawling describes three bots (the article shows no date; we read it on 15 October 2026). As of that reading, ClaudeBot collects web content that could contribute to training its generative AI models. Restricting it signals that your future materials should be excluded from training datasets.

Claude-User supports Claude users. It may access websites when a person asks Claude a question. Anthropic says disabling it blocks retrieval of your content for user queries and may reduce your visibility in user directed web search.

Claude-SearchBot navigates the web to improve search result quality. Anthropic says disabling it stops indexing of your content for search and may reduce your visibility and accuracy in user search results. In short, these two are the ones that bear on being cited. ClaudeBot is a training question and a separate decision.

  • Claude-SearchBot is allowed if you want to be indexed for search
  • Claude-User is allowed if you want live retrieval for user questions
  • ClaudeBot is a deliberate training choice, not a visibility lever
  • Each subdomain has its own robots.txt that you have checked

Check all three in one go with our AI crawler access checker, or build the rules with the robots.txt generator.

Controls

How Anthropic says site owners can control access

Dated October 2026. Anthropic can revise this article, so we recheck it for every project.

Robots.txt is honored

Anthropic says its bots follow industry standard robots.txt directives. Use a rule per user agent and per subdomain.

Crawl delay

Anthropic supports the non standard Crawl delay extension to slow crawling, and says it aims to crawl at a measured pace.

Blocking by IP is risky

Anthropic says IP blocking may not work reliably as an opt out, because it stops the bots reading your robots.txt. It also says it does not publish IP ranges for its bots, because they use public IPs from service providers that can change.

No ranking disclosure

Anthropic does not publish how Claude chooses which pages to use or cite in an answer.

Product differences

Claude in the app, through the API and inside other tools may behave differently. We test the setting your buyers use.

No guarantee

Answers vary by prompt, by settings and by model version. We report patterns across repeated runs.

Our approach

Why plain, well sourced pages suit Claude

Claude is often used to summarize, compare and explain. That kind of task works best on pages with clear statements, labeled sections and visible sources. A page that says what you do, for whom, where and at what level of evidence gives a summarizer something solid to work with.

We cannot claim this is how Claude scores sources, because Anthropic has not published that. It is our working judgment from testing, and we label it that way. What we do rely on is the documented part: if the right crawler is blocked, Claude cannot retrieve your page for a search.

We also treat other places where your brand is described as part of the job. A model that answers from memory draws on what the wider web says about you. Consistent facts on your site and in third party descriptions lower the risk of wrong answers. If something false is already out there, our guide to fixing wrong information about your brand in AI shows the approach.

What we implement

The Claude related fixes we make

We do the work on your site. You approve each change.

First we read your robots.txt and any firewall or CDN bot rules, and confirm which Anthropic crawlers can reach your key pages. Many sites that blocked ClaudeBot for training also blocked the search and user bots by accident through a wildcard rule.

Next we align entity data and structured data, and rewrite priority pages with answer first openings, question style headings and FAQs. We may add a short llms.txt as a low cost guide to your key pages. We have no Anthropic statement that Claude depends on it, so we treat it as optional. See llms.txt: do you need one.

  • Each Anthropic bot allowed or blocked on purpose
  • No wildcard rule catching search and user bots
  • Answer first rewrites on priority pages
  • Consistent brand facts across site and profiles

Readiness check

Claude access in under an hour

  • ✓Claude-SearchBot is allowed if you want to be indexed
  • ✓Claude-User is allowed if you want live retrieval
  • ✓ClaudeBot is a deliberate training choice
  • ✓Each subdomain has its own robots.txt you have checked
  • A wildcard rule catches the search and user bots
  • You rely on IP allow lists
Anthropic says it does not publish IP ranges for its bots.

Process

How this runs inside the GEO Pilot

  1. 1

    Week 1: baseline

We run up to 20 buyer prompts across five AI engines, including Claude, and record who is named and cited. We check crawler access and audit technical and entity signals.

  2. 2

    Week 2: technical fixes

We fix robots rules, sitemap, canonicals and structured data, and add llms.txt if useful.

  3. 3

    Week 3: content

We rewrite and restructure up to 10 priority pages to be answer ready.

  4. 4

    Week 4: retest and report

We rerun the prompts, show before and after, and hand over a 90 day roadmap.

Quick checklist

How to check your Claude readiness in under an hour

  1. 1

Open robots.txt and search for Anthropic names

Look for ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot. Note which are allowed, which are blocked and whether a wildcard group covers any of them by default.

  2. 2

    Separate the training decision

If you blocked ClaudeBot to keep content out of training, confirm that the rule names only ClaudeBot and does not catch the other two.

  3. 3

    Check server logs

Search for the three user agent names. Anthropic says it does not publish IP ranges, so you cannot rely on IP allow lists; the user agent and your robots rules are the main handles.

  4. 4

Look at the CDN and bot protection

Because IP based allow lists are not available, test that a normal request with these user agents is not challenged. Use the AI crawler access checker as a first pass.

  5. 5

    Ask Claude about your brand

Ask who you are and what you sell, with and without web search where the product allows it. Record the answers and the date. Note what is from memory and what shows sources.

  6. 6

List the errors and their likely origins

For each wrong claim, find the page or listing it likely came from, and note whether you control it.

Content

What kinds of pages work for a model that summarizes and compares?

Claude is often asked to compare options, explain trade offs and summarize long material. Pages that suit that use include comparison tables with stated criteria, step by step procedures, definitions that state scope and limits, and policy pages that say plainly what is and is not covered. Marketing copy with no specifics is the weakest input.

Where claims need support, give the source and the date. If you did the work, say which work and for whom, in a way that can be checked. If you cannot share names, describe the situation honestly rather than inventing detail. See original data and statistics for AI citations for how to publish your own data in a way that holds up.

Keep documents navigable. Labeled sections, a clear title and a short summary at the top help any reader, human or machine. Link to your fuller pages from the summary, so the detailed version is easy to find. This is the base of GEO content strategy.

Knowledge versus retrieval

Claude answering from memory versus from a live fetch

A model can answer from what it learned in training or from content fetched at the time of the question. Anthropic's documentation separates the bots by those jobs: ClaudeBot for training data, Claude-User for user requests, Claude-SearchBot for search quality. That is the documented part.

What follows is our reasoning, not a published rule. For recent changes, such as a new product or price, memory is likely out of date, so only a live fetch can be right. For long standing facts, memory may be enough, and then what the wider web said about you earlier matters. This is why we work on both: crawler access for live fetches, and consistent descriptions across the web for memory.

It also explains why we log whether web access was used in each test. A wrong answer without sources points to memory and to third party descriptions. A wrong answer with sources points to a page you can fix. Our post on how AI search engines choose sources describes the general pattern.

Two ways to answer

Answer from memory

  • Draws on training and older web text
  • Can be out of date on prices or products
  • A wrong answer with no sources points to third party text

Answer from a live fetch

  • Needs Claude-User or Claude-SearchBot access
  • Can reflect a recent change
  • A wrong answer with sources points to a page you can fix
The bot roles are documented. The reading of memory versus fetch is our own reasoning.

Worked example, hypothetical

Example: a London accounting firm that Claude describes wrongly

Example, hypothetical: a UK accounting practice asks Claude who the best advisers are for small business tax in London, and Claude describes the firm as a payroll bureau. The audit finds that a wildcard rule blocks Claude-SearchBot, the service pages call everything "financial solutions", and an old directory lists payroll as the main service.

We would split the robots rules so that training stays blocked if the firm wants that, while Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are allowed. We would rewrite the services page with plain names for each service, who it is for and what is not offered. We would correct the directory entry and align Organization data. Then we would retest.

If the description improves in some runs and not others, we report both. Read GEO for professional services and GEO agency in the UK for the context.

Mistakes

Claude SEO mistakes and fixes

Most come from mixing up training and search.

One rule for all Anthropic bots

Block ClaudeBot by name, and allow the other two on purpose.

Relying on IP allow lists

Anthropic says it does not publish ranges. Use user agent rules and test requests.

Generic service names

"Solutions" says nothing. Name each service in plain words.

Ignoring old descriptions

Memory based answers reflect older text. Correct high ranking listings.

No test log

Record date, mode and sources in each run.

Asking for guarantees

No one can promise a Claude mention. Judge the work by the evidence.

Measurement

How we report on Claude results

Our Claude report lists each prompt, the run dates, whether web access appeared to be used, whether your brand was named, whether a page of yours was linked and whether the description was accurate. We keep it by prompt so you can read the evidence yourself.

We do not turn this into a score or a rank, because Claude has no stable ranking to report. We report presence and accuracy across a fixed set, before and after. If you want a deeper method, see how to get cited by Claude and our GEO reporting template.

Claude traffic is often small in analytics, because many answers do not send a click. Treat visits as one signal and named mentions as another. For professional and technical buyers, a correct mention in a research answer can matter long before a visit shows up.

Next step

Where Claude work fits in the GEO Pilot

Claude is one of five engines in the Pilot baseline. The fixes overlap strongly with the other four engines. The free AI visibility checker is a quick first look.

The GEO Pilot is a fixed $999 (USD), one time price, delivered inside 30 days, done for you. It covers one domain and one language. A site build, ongoing digital PR, link building and paid media are not included, and we make no promise of mentions. See the GEO Pilot page for the full scope.

The problem

Why brands are missing or wrong in Claude

A wildcard block

A broad rule meant to stop training also stops the search and user bots.

Thin identity

Claude has little clear information about who you are and what you sell.

Conflicting descriptions

Directories and profiles say different things about your services.

No answer on the page

The page never states the fact in plain words, so there is nothing to quote.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which Claude crawler affects whether I can be cited?

Anthropic says Claude-SearchBot affects indexing for search and Claude-User affects retrieval when a person asks a question. ClaudeBot relates to training data. Check the current article, as it can change.

Should I block ClaudeBot?

That is a decision about training use. Anthropic documents it as separate from Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot. We set each rule as you decide and make sure a wildcard does not block the others.

Does Anthropic respect robots.txt?

Anthropic says its bots honor industry standard robots.txt directives and support the Crawl delay extension. It advises against IP blocking as an opt out.

Can you guarantee Claude will recommend my business?

No. Anthropic does not publish how Claude picks or cites sources. We guarantee the work and an honest before and after test.

Is Claude worth optimizing for?

It depends on your buyers. Technical and professional buyers often use it for research. We test whether Claude names you in the baseline, then tell you if the effort is worth it.

Do I need llms.txt for Claude?

We have no Anthropic statement that Claude uses it. We add one when it is cheap and useful, and we say it is optional.

Does this work on any website platform?

Yes. The Pilot works on WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, custom code and headless sites. You give access and approve changes.

Can I block ClaudeBot and still appear in Claude answers?

Anthropic documents ClaudeBot as the training related bot and Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot as separate bots for user requests and search. So blocking ClaudeBot alone is a training decision. Anthropic notes that disabling the other two may reduce visibility in user directed search.

Does Anthropic publish IP ranges for its crawlers?

As of our reading on 15 October 2026, Anthropic says it does not publish IP ranges, because its bots use public IPs from service providers that may change. It also says IP blocking is not a reliable opt out. Use user agent rules in robots.txt.

What can I do if Claude gives wrong information about my brand?

Find where the claim likely comes from, then fix pages you own and correct third party listings. Make your site state key facts plainly. Retest later, noting whether web access was used, since memory based answers update slowly.
