ChatGPT SEO: how we get your brand named and cited in ChatGPT
ChatGPT now searches the web for many questions and links to the sources it uses. We make sure your site can be found, read and trusted by that process. We cannot promise a placement, and nobody honest can.
Facts about ChatGPT on this page are dated October 2026 and checked against OpenAI documentation.

ChatGPT SEO is not a trick. It is a set of checks and fixes that remove reasons for the engine to skip you, plus content that is easy to quote. Results vary by prompt, by country, by day and by model version, so we measure with a fixed set of prompts and report what changed.

How it works
How ChatGPT finds sources, according to OpenAI
ChatGPT can answer from what the model learned in training, or it can run a web search and cite what it finds. When it searches, it shows links to the sources. That second path is the one you can influence today, because it depends on pages that exist on the open web right now.
OpenAI documents four user agents on its developer site (read on 15 October 2026). Three matter for visibility and training choices; the fourth checks landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads and is outside the scope of organic work. OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search features. GPTBot is used to collect content that may train OpenAI's foundation models. ChatGPT-User is used when a person asks ChatGPT something that needs a live page visit, for example inside a conversation or a custom GPT. As of October 2026, OpenAI says each of these settings is independent, so a site can allow search and still disallow training.
OpenAI also states that a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link. The documentation recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing OpenAI's published IP ranges. It says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to be picked up for search.
- OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in robots.txt
- Your firewall or CDN does not challenge OpenAI's published IP ranges
- GPTBot is a separate choice: allow or block it for training reasons, not for visibility reasons
- ChatGPT-User may not follow robots.txt, because a person asked for the visit

OAI-SearchBot
Surfaces sites in search
- Allow on public pages
- Opt out and you are not shown in search answers
- Changes take about 24 hours
GPTBot
Training collection
- Allow or block for training reasons
- Does not remove you from search
- Decide this first
ChatGPT-User
Live page visits
- Runs when a person asks
- Robots rules may not apply
- Control at the server if needed
What is documented
What OpenAI tells site owners, and what it does not
Dated October 2026. OpenAI changes these pages, so we recheck them at the start of every project.
Separate crawlers, separate jobs
OAI-SearchBot for search, GPTBot for training, ChatGPT-User for user requests, plus an ads landing page checker. Treat them as separate decisions.
Search needs access
If OAI-SearchBot is opted out, OpenAI says your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Link only appearances remain possible.
Changes take time
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for a robots.txt update to be reflected for search. Plan tests after that window.
Referral tagging
In our own analytics checks, visits from ChatGPT search links often carry a utm_source of chatgpt.com. We have not found this in the crawler documentation, so verify it in your own data before you rely on it.
No ranking formula
OpenAI does not publish how it chooses or orders sources. Anyone who claims to know the exact formula is guessing.
No paid placement route
We know of no way to pay for a citation in ChatGPT search answers. Be careful with anyone who sells one.
Honest limits
What nobody outside OpenAI can know
ChatGPT answers change between runs. The same prompt asked twice can cite different sources. Answers also differ by location, by logged in state, by memory settings and by model version. That is why a single screenshot proves very little, and why we never treat one good answer as a result.
What is observable is a pattern. Across many prompts and repeated runs, certain things show up again: pages that answer the question in the first lines, brands that are described the same way on their own site and on third party sites, and domains that are easy for crawlers to reach. We treat those as strong hypotheses, not laws. Engines change often, and what works in October 2026 may be weaker in 2027.
This is the honest frame for every ChatGPT project we run. We fix what is documented and what is plainly broken. We improve what is likely to help. We test, and we tell you what moved and what did not.
What we do
The ChatGPT work, step by step
Every item here is something we implement for you, not a list of advice.
First, access. We read your robots.txt, your CDN and firewall rules, and your server logs where available, and confirm OAI-SearchBot can fetch your key pages. Many sites block AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or a bot protection rule.
Second, identity. ChatGPT is more likely to describe you correctly when your name, services, location and proof read the same everywhere. We align your about page, contact page, structured data and key profiles. See technical GEO and entity consistency for the detail.
Third, content. We rewrite priority pages so the answer comes first, headings match real buyer questions, and facts are stated plainly with a source or a date where it matters.
- Crawler access confirmed on key pages
- Organization and service data matches visible text
- Direct answers near the top of each priority page
- FAQs written from real buyer questions
Record what AI engines say today.
Open access and repair the foundation.
Make priority pages answer ready.
Test again and report.
Process
How this runs inside the GEO Pilot
- 1
Week 1: baseline
We run up to 20 buyer prompts across five AI engines, including ChatGPT, and record who is named, who is cited and what is said about you. We also check crawler access and audit technical and entity signals.
- 2
Week 2: technical fixes
We fix robots rules, sitemap, canonicals and structured data, and add llms.txt if it is useful. We do this on your site with your approval.
- 3
Week 3: content
We rewrite and restructure up to 10 priority pages so they are answer ready, with direct answers, question style headings, FAQs and schema.
- 4
Week 4: retest and report
We rerun the same prompts, show before and after, and hand over a 90 day roadmap.

Compare
What helps, what is unproven, what is a myth
| Tactic | Status as of October 2026 | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Allow OAI-SearchBot | Documented by OpenAI as needed to appear in search answers | Do it first |
| Direct answer pages with clear headings | Not documented as a ranking factor, but consistent with how retrieval systems pull passages | Strong hypothesis, we apply it |
| Consistent brand facts across sites | Not documented, widely observed in tests | Strong hypothesis, we apply it |
| llms.txt | OpenAI has not said it uses it for ChatGPT search | Low cost, low confidence. We add it only when useful. See llms.txt explained |
| No documented route | Avoid |

Measurement
How we measure ChatGPT results without fooling ourselves
We keep the prompt list fixed. We run it before we change anything and again after the fixes, at the same settings where we can. We record whether your brand is named, whether your domain is cited, which page is cited, and whether the description is correct. We note every run date, because a result without a date means little.
We also look at traffic. ChatGPT search links often arrive in analytics with a utm_source of chatgpt.com, which we have seen in client data but have not verified in OpenAI documentation, so your analytics may show visits from that source. Many answers never produce a click, so a mention can matter even when the visit count stays low. Our guide to measuring GEO performance explains how to read both signals.
We do not report a ranking, because ChatGPT does not have a stable one. We report presence and accuracy across a defined set of prompts.
Quick checklist
How to check your ChatGPT readiness in under an hour
- 1
Read your robots.txt
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Look for rules naming OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot or ChatGPT-User, and for a wildcard Disallow that blocks everything. A wildcard written to stop scrapers often blocks OAI-SearchBot too.
- 2
Test a real fetch
Run the file through the AI crawler access checker. A permissive robots.txt is not enough if your CDN or bot protection returns a challenge page to unknown crawlers.
- 3
Check the firewall
OpenAI publishes IP range files for each of its user agents, including openai.com/searchbot.json for OAI-SearchBot. Ask whoever manages your CDN to confirm those ranges are not rate limited or challenged.
- 4
Open your key pages as a crawler would
Disable JavaScript or view the page source. If the price, service name or main answer only appears after scripts run, a crawler that does not render scripts may never see it.
- 5
Search for your brand in ChatGPT
Ask three questions: who is [brand], what does [brand] do, and what are the best [your service] in [your city]. Write down what is said, which sources are linked, and what is wrong.
- 6
Compare against your own site
Mark every statement ChatGPT gets wrong, then find the page or listing that likely caused it. Most wrong answers trace back to an old directory entry or a vague page.

Which OpenAI crawler should you allow? A decision guide
| Your goal | What we usually set | |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search features; opting out means no appearance in search answers, only possible navigational links | Allow OAI-SearchBot on public pages | |
| Keep content out of model training | Disallowing GPTBot signals content should not be used to train OpenAI's foundation models | Disallow GPTBot if training use is a concern; this does not remove you from search |
| Let ChatGPT open a page when a user pastes a link or asks a live question | ChatGPT-User handles user initiated visits; robots.txt rules may not apply | Do not rely on robots.txt for this agent; control access at the server if needed |
| Do both search and training with fewer crawls | OpenAI says if both OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are allowed it may use one crawl for both purposes | Decide on training first, then set search separately |
| Protect a private area | Robots.txt is a request, not security | Use authentication, not robots rules |

Implementation
What a safe robots.txt looks like for ChatGPT visibility
A common safe pattern is to name OAI-SearchBot with an Allow rule for the public site, then decide GPTBot separately. In plain terms the file has a group that starts with User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Allow: /, and a second group that starts with User-agent: GPTBot followed by either Allow: / or Disallow: /, depending on your training choice. Put private paths such as admin, cart and account pages under Disallow in the group that applies to all agents.
Order and specificity matter. A crawler follows the most specific user agent group that matches it. If you name OAI-SearchBot explicitly, it will follow that group and ignore the wildcard group. That is why a named Allow works even when the wildcard group is strict. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt goes through more patterns, and the robots.txt generator builds a file for you to review.
After you publish a change, OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for search to reflect it. So plan your first retest for the next day, not the same hour. If you use a CDN with cached robots.txt, purge the cache first, or the old file may keep being served.
- Named group for OAI-SearchBot with Allow for public pages
- GPTBot group set deliberately, with the reason written down
- Private paths blocked for all agents
- Robots.txt cache purged after each edit
- Retest scheduled at least one day later
Prompt research
Which prompts should you track for ChatGPT?
Tracking your brand name alone tells you very little. Buyers rarely ask for you by name before they know you. They ask for a category, a comparison or a problem. A useful ChatGPT prompt set mixes four types: category prompts (best [service] in [city]), comparison prompts ([option A] versus [option B] for [use case]), problem prompts (how do I fix [issue] in [situation]) and brand prompts (is [brand] good, what does [brand] charge). Each type exercises a different part of retrieval.
Write prompts the way a buyer types them, not the way a marketer would. Include the city or country when the purchase is local, and the buyer's role when it is B2B. In the Pilot we use up to 20 prompts and keep them fixed from the baseline to the retest, so that any change is comparable. If you want to build a list yourself, start with our guide to researching buyer prompts.
Run each prompt more than once. ChatGPT answers vary between runs, so a single answer is an anecdote. Record the date, whether search was triggered, the brands named, the domains linked and any wrong statement. Search is not triggered for every prompt, and a prompt that does not search tells you about model memory instead of your site.
Worked example, hypothetical
Example: a Dubai dental clinic that ChatGPT never mentions
Example, hypothetical: a Dubai dental clinic with a good site finds that ChatGPT never names it for "best pediatric dentist in Dubai". The audit shows three problems. The firewall returns a challenge page to unknown bots, so OAI-SearchBot cannot fetch the pages. The pediatric service sits inside a long page about all treatments, with no heading that matches the question. And two old directory listings show a previous clinic address.
The fixes follow the problems. We ask for the bot protection rule to be relaxed for OpenAI's published ranges. We create a dedicated pediatric dentistry page that opens with a two sentence answer, lists treatments, states the languages spoken and the area served, and adds an FAQ built from questions parents actually ask. We align the address across the site, the Google Business Profile and the main directories. We add Organization and local business data that matches the visible text.
What we would not claim: that this guarantees a mention. After the changes we run the same prompts again and report what changed, including if nothing did. If the clinic is named in some runs and not others, we say so. For the sector view, see GEO for clinics and local GEO.
- pediatric dentistry Dubai
- languages spoken at the clinic
- area served and address
- parent FAQs on treatments
Mistakes
Common ChatGPT SEO mistakes and how to fix each
These are patterns we look for in the baseline week.
Blocking every AI bot at once
A copied block list stops OAI-SearchBot along with training crawlers. Fix: split the rules and allow the search crawler on purpose.
Hiding facts in PDFs and images
A price list inside an image or a PDF is hard to quote. Fix: publish the same facts as HTML text on the page that answers the question.
One page for everything
A single long services page cannot answer ten different questions well. Fix: give each core question its own page or clearly headed section.
Testing too soon
Checking an hour after a robots.txt edit proves nothing. Fix: wait at least a day, then rerun the same prompts.
Judging by one answer
One screenshot is not a result. Fix: repeat each prompt, log the dates and track the pattern.
Ignoring third party descriptions
ChatGPT may repeat what directories and reviews say about you. Fix: correct the major listings so they match your site.
Fix these before you retest
- ✓Split rules so OAI-SearchBot is allowed on purpose
- ✓Publish prices and facts as HTML text
- ✓Give each core question its own page or section
- ✓Wait a day, then rerun the same prompts
- Block every AI bot with a copied list
- Judge results by one screenshot
- Leave old directory listings uncorrected
Next step
Where ChatGPT work fits in the GEO Pilot
ChatGPT is one of five engines in the Pilot baseline, and most of the work helps all five. The crawler and entity fixes are shared. What is specific to ChatGPT is the OpenAI crawler rules, the prompt set and the retest. If you only want to know where you stand today, the free AI visibility checker is a starting point.
The GEO Pilot is a fixed $999 (USD), one time price, delivered inside 30 days, done for you. It covers one domain and one language, and it does not include a new site build, ongoing digital PR, link building or paid media. Read the full scope on the GEO Pilot page, or compare with the wider GEO overview.
The problem
Common reasons a business is missing from ChatGPT
A security rule blocks the crawler
Bot protection or a plugin treats OAI-SearchBot as a threat, so the site cannot be fetched.
The site does not say what you are
Vague pages and a missing about page leave the engine unsure what to say about you.
The answer is buried
The page opens with a long story. A retrieval system wants a clear passage that answers the question.
Facts conflict across the web
Old listings and profiles describe a different address, service or name.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. OpenAI does not publish how it picks sources, and answers vary run to run. We guarantee the work: access, entity signals, answer ready pages and honest before and after testing.
Which OpenAI crawler matters for being cited?
As of October 2026, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search features. GPTBot relates to model training and ChatGPT-User relates to user initiated visits. They are independent settings.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is a business choice about training use, not a visibility switch. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and still disallow GPTBot. We explain the trade offs and set it as you decide.
How long until I see changes in ChatGPT?
OpenAI says a robots.txt update can take about 24 hours to reflect for search. Content changes depend on when pages are recrawled. We retest at the end of the 30 day Pilot and report what moved.
Does this work on WordPress, Shopify or custom sites?
Yes. The Pilot works on any site, including WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, custom code and headless builds. You give access and approve changes, and we implement.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?
Parts overlap, such as clear content and crawlability. The access rules, the source selection and the way answers are shown differ. Our page on what stays the same between GEO and SEO covers it.
Do I need to pay for ChatGPT ads to be cited?
No documented link exists between buying ads and being cited in an answer. We do not run paid media in the Pilot.
Why does ChatGPT sometimes not search the web at all?
ChatGPT can answer from model memory or run a search, depending on the question and the product settings. Questions about current facts, local businesses and comparisons tend to trigger search more often, but this varies. That is why we log whether search was used in every test run.
What is ChatGPT-User and can I block it?
OpenAI documents ChatGPT-User as the agent that handles user initiated actions, such as visiting a page to answer a question. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it because a person triggered the visit. If you must restrict it, use server level controls and test the result.
Does ChatGPT SEO help a local business?
Yes, when buyers ask ChatGPT for local recommendations. The work focuses on crawler access, consistent name, address and service details, and pages that answer local questions. We cannot promise a mention, and local results can vary by location.
