A working digest of 86 findings on AI answers, clicks, citations and AI traffic, taken from Pew Research Center, Ahrefs, Semrush, Seer Interactive, Adobe, Similarweb, Cloudflare, Google and the original GEO paper. Each number links to its source and carries its date, sample and method, because a statistic without those is not evidence.

Semrush, October 2026correlation between web mentions and AI Overview visibility, the strongest factor tested
Ahrefs, May 2025of llms.txt files received no requests in a month
Ahrefs, June 2026The audience question is settled. Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month and that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users after its global expansion. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026. In the United States, Pew found that 49% of adults use AI chatbots and 42% use them to look things up.
What is not settled is how often an AI answer appears. Published estimates for Google range from about 11% to over 40% of searches. They differ because each study samples different queries, countries and months, and because AI Overviews show far more often on long informational questions than on short commercial ones. Ask which kind of query a number describes before you plan around it.

Every independent study we found points the same way. Pew tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults and found that people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, against 15% when it did not. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary itself.
Click models from Ahrefs and Seer Interactive agree on direction and disagree on size. Ahrefs now estimates a 58% lower click through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears. Seer measured organic click through on AI Overview queries falling from 1.76% to 0.61% over fifteen months. Zero click behaviour is rising too: SparkToro data reported 68% of US Google searches ending without a click in early 2026, and Semrush found 92% to 94% of AI Mode sessions never left Google.
One finding cuts the other way and deserves attention. Seer found that brands cited inside an AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that were not cited. The click pool is shrinking, and being the cited source is how you keep a share of it.
Pew’s bar shows the relative fall from 15% to 8% of visits (about 47%). Studies use different samples and periods; read each card below for the method.

Measured as a share of all visits, AI referrals are still small. Conductor’s benchmark of 1,215 enterprise sites put them at 1.08% of traffic, with ChatGPT sending 87.4% of it. Growth is the story: Similarweb counted 770.7 million AI referral visits a month worldwide, up 117% in a year, and Adobe saw generative AI traffic to US retail sites rise 693% over the 2025 holidays.
Quality has improved quickly. A year before May 2026, Adobe found AI visitors converted at roughly half the rate of other visitors. By May 2026 they converted 54% better and produced 53% more revenue per visit. Treat these as retail figures for a stated period, not a promise for your sector.
For B2B the shift is in the buying journey rather than the traffic report. In G2’s 2026 survey, 51% of software buyers said they start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, and 69% said they picked a vendor they had not planned to because a chatbot recommended it.

In mid 2025 most pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google’s top ten. By 2026 that link had loosened. Ahrefs found 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top ten in March 2026, down from about 76% the year before, and 31% did not rank in the top 100 at all. Conductor found 57% of citations going to pages outside the top ten. The likely reason is query fan out: Google runs several related searches behind one answer and cites pages that rank for those, not only for the words you typed.
Other engines overlap with Google even less. Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, Ahrefs found only about 12% of cited URLs ranked in Google’s top ten for the same prompt. Even Google’s own two features disagree: AI Mode and AI Overviews shared just 13.7% of cited URLs for the same query.
Each platform also leans on different kinds of sites. In the Semrush UK and US index, ChatGPT listed the most sources per answer and leaned on news sites, AI Overviews leaned on YouTube and medical references, and AI Mode concentrated a large share of its citations on a handful of domains.
Methods differ: some studies count URLs, some keywords, some domains. Conductor’s bar is 100% minus its 57% outside the top ten.

Ahrefs' July 2025 study found about 76% of AI Overview-cited pages ranked in the top 10; its March 2026 update found about 38%, which the author attributes to greater reliance on query fan-out sub-searches. These conflict across time.

A mention means the AI named your brand in its answer. A citation means it listed your domain as a source. Semrush’s seven month index of the UK and US shows how far apart the two lists sit: across 22 categories and four platforms, fewer than half of the most mentioned brands were also among the most cited domains, in every month measured. ChatGPT had the widest gap.
The gap mostly runs one way. Each month several well known brands were named on every platform while their own websites sat outside the top 500 sources, such as Ford, Toyota and Disney in the US. The reverse, a site cited heavily while its brand was rarely named, almost never happened. In the UK, Tesco and Asda were both top 25 for ChatGPT mentions, yet Tesco ranked 25th as a cited domain and Asda 606th.
What predicts being mentioned at all? In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, the strongest correlate of AI Overview visibility was how often the brand is mentioned across the web (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218). That is correlation, not proof of cause, but it matches what we see: the web’s description of you shapes the answer.

The best controlled evidence is still the 2023 GEO paper by researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi and others, published at KDD 2024. On a benchmark of 10,000 queries, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page’s visibility in the generated answer the most, by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing scored below doing nothing. It was a lab engine, so treat the size of the effect with care, but the direction matches every later study.
Freshness matters. Ahrefs found AI assistants cite pages that are on average 25.7% newer than the pages ranking in normal results, and SE Ranking found recently updated pages earned more ChatGPT citations. Format evidence is weaker and sometimes contradicts itself. Listicles were the most cited page type in one study, longer and well sectioned articles did better in another, and FAQ sections showed no clear benefit in the raw data even though the study’s summary claimed one.

In raw averages, pages with FAQ sections averaged 3.8 ChatGPT citations vs 4.1 without, and question-style headings 3.4 vs 4.3; the study's own takeaways claim FAQs help, so the evidence conflicts.

AI answers vary from run to run. SparkToro and Gumshoe found the odds of ChatGPT, Claude or Google’s AI returning the same list of recommended brands twice were under 1 in 100, and the same list in the same order about 1 in 1,000. SE Ranking ran identical AI Mode searches three times on the same day and found the answers shared only 9.2% of exact URLs.
This changes how visibility should be reported. A single screenshot of an answer, good or bad, is an anecdote. Useful measurement repeats a fixed set of questions on a schedule, records the date, market and platform, and reports how often a brand appears across runs.

Crawler access is the one technical factor that clearly gates everything else: a page an AI system cannot fetch cannot be read for an answer. Blocking is less common than often assumed. Cloudflare found GPTBot disallowed in 7.8% of the top 10,000 domains that publish a robots.txt file, although news publishers block far more often. Separate search crawlers from training crawlers before you block anything.
Files made for AI show little measured effect. About 28% of the 137,210 domains Ahrefs checked had an llms.txt file, but 97% of those files received no requests in a month, and Google says its search does not use them. Adding JSON LD schema showed no meaningful citation uplift in Ahrefs’ 2026 test, and Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. Schema still helps search engines read facts correctly; it is not a citation switch.
Adoption estimates vary widely because samples differ. Common Crawl notes Sistrix measured under 0.005% and the 2025 Web Almanac about 2%.
Only about 37% of the top 10,000 domains had a robots.txt file, and GPTBot was disallowed in 7.8% of top domains' robots.txt files (Google-Extended 5.6%, ClaudeBot under 5%).

Including llms.txt showed negligible impact on ChatGPT citation likelihood, and removing it as a feature improved the model's predictive accuracy.

These are GrowingAI’s working rules, drawn from the studies above. They guide how we plan and report client work. They are judgements, not guarantees, and we revise them when new evidence arrives.
Published studies, surveys and official statements about AI search with a stated source, date and method. We prefer the original publisher. Where only coverage was available, the card says "Reported by a third party".
We open each source, copy the figure and its wording, and record the sample, period and URL in our data file. We do not round in ways that change meaning, and we do not combine figures from different studies into one number.
We show all of them side by side with their methods, as with AI Overview frequency and ranking overlap. Different samples and periods explain most disagreements.
Most studies are correlational and many come from SEO tool vendors using their own data. None proves that a tactic will produce citations for your brand. Use them to choose what to test.
We review this page at least quarterly and date every change. If you spot an error or a newer version of a study, email hello@thegrowingai.com and we will correct it.

FAQ
Estimates range from about 11% to over 40% of searches, depending on the study. BrightEdge reported over 11% in May 2025, Pew Research Center 18% of real searches in March 2025, Conductor 25.11% of an enterprise keyword set in 2026, and Similarweb over 40% of US searches in 2026. The figures differ because each study samples different queries, countries and months. Long informational questions trigger AI Overviews far more often than short commercial searches.
Yes. Pew found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits. Ahrefs estimates position one click through is 58% lower when an AI Overview appears, and Seer Interactive measured a 61% fall on AI Overview queries. Seer also found brands cited inside the AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks than brands that were not.
Less than they used to. Ahrefs found about 76% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top ten in July 2025 but 37.9% in March 2026, with 31% outside the top 100. Conductor found 57% of citations outside the top ten. Google runs several related searches behind one answer, so pages that rank for those sub questions get cited. For ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, only about 12% of cited URLs ranked in Google’s top ten for the same prompt.
A mention means the AI names your brand in its answer. A citation means it lists a page on your domain as a source. Semrush’s 2026 UK and US index found fewer than half of the most mentioned brands were also among the most cited domains in every month, with ChatGPT showing the widest gap. Measure the two separately, because they need different fixes.
There is little evidence that it does. Ahrefs found about 28% of 137,210 domains had an llms.txt file, but 97% of those files received no requests in May 2026. Google says its search does not use such files, and SE Ranking found llms.txt had negligible impact on ChatGPT citations. It is cheap to publish, but treat it as optional hygiene rather than a citation tactic.
Not measurably in current tests. Ahrefs found pages that added JSON LD schema saw no meaningful citation uplift in ChatGPT or AI Mode in 2026. Google says structured data is not required for AI features and there is no special markup to add. Schema still helps search engines read your business facts correctly, so keep it accurate and matched to the visible page.
