A local question carries a place and a need. The engine has to decide which businesses exist there, which fit the need, and which it can describe without risk. Businesses with clear, matching details in many places are easier to describe.

No one outside the engines knows exactly which data each one uses for local answers. Some lean on map and business listing data, some on web search, some on both, and these choices change. Our approach covers all the sources a local answer is likely to touch.

What changed

Local search used to be a map list. Now it is often a written recommendation

A person searching for a plumber once saw three map results and a list. Now they may ask an AI tool, in full sentences, for a plumber who handles emergencies on a Sunday in their area, and get a short written answer with a few names.

That answer might be built from your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews, a directory listing and a news story. If these disagree about your hours, services or address, the engine may skip you or repeat the wrong detail.

Local GEO is about making that picture accurate and complete. It builds on classic local SEO and adds the work of answering the plain language questions that people now type or speak.

  • One true description of the business, everywhere
  • Services and areas stated in plain words
  • Reviews and profiles that match your website

Check your own listing right now. Wrong opening hours on one profile are the cheapest fault to fix and one of the most common.

Scope

What local GEO covers

We work across the places an engine may look, in this order of value.

Business profiles

Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect where they apply. Name, categories, hours, services, service areas and descriptions that match your site.

Location pages

One real page per location or service area with address, services, team, access details and answers to local questions. No copied pages with a swapped city name.

Reviews and reputation

A plan to ask real customers for honest reviews, and a way to reply properly. We never buy or fake reviews.

Structured data

LocalBusiness and related schema.org markup that matches visible page content, so machines can read your details exactly.

Citations and directories

Consistent listings on credible local and industry directories. Quality and accuracy matter more than count.

Local prompt testing

We test prompts that include a city or area and record who is named, so you see the real local picture.

Profiles

Your Google Business Profile is still the base layer

Even in an AI world, a profile with clean facts feeds many local answers.

Google's own documentation says profile information such as name, address, hours and categories should reflect the real world. Keep primary and secondary categories honest, list services, add real photos, and publish updates people can use.

Rules differ between a storefront, a service area business and a practitioner. We follow the platform guidelines for your type. Our post on GEO for local businesses walks through the checks. As of October 2026 Google Business Profile guidelines are the reference, and we review them when we start.

  • Primary category matches what you most want to be found for
  • Services listed with plain descriptions
  • Same name, address and phone as the website

USA and UK

Multi location

Several branches need a clear system, not copies

A business with five locations often ends up with five similar pages, each with slightly different contact details. Engines see near duplicates and have no reason to pick one.

Each location page should hold facts unique to it: team, local services, directions, local cases with permission, and answers to questions people in that area actually ask. A central page can then explain the whole group and link to each branch.

We also check that each branch profile points to the right page and that staff do not create duplicate profiles for the same place, which is a common source of confusion.

  • One profile and one page per real location
  • Unique local detail on each page
  • A parent page that links the group together

Profile rules

Google Business Profile rules that affect AI answers

The guidelines for representing your business on Google, as read in October 2026, give clear rules that also protect you from errors engines might repeat. The business name should be the name customers know from your storefront, website and stationery, without taglines, hours, phone numbers, URLs or location details added. Chains should use the same name and category at every location within a country, with limited exceptions. Create one profile per location.

The address must be a real, physical place where customers can visit. P.O. boxes, remote mailboxes and virtual offices are not eligible. Service area businesses that travel to customers get one profile for their base with a service area, and Google says they should hide their address. Google also says service areas generally should not extend beyond about two hours of driving time from the base. Hybrid businesses that serve customers at a staffed location can show an address.

Categories should be the fewest that describe your core business, as specific as possible, and never keywords. Hours should be regular customer facing hours, and businesses with varied or appointment only schedules generally should not list hours. Descriptions cannot contain links, promotions or prices. We use these rules as an audit list. Where your profile breaks one, it is both a risk of suspension and a source of facts that might be quoted wrongly.

  • Name matches signage and website exactly
  • One profile per real location
  • Service area businesses hide the address
  • Fewest, most specific categories chosen

A profile suspended over a name stuffed with keywords can remove you from local answers faster than any competitor can.

Schema

LocalBusiness structured data: what Google documents and what we add

From Google Search Central's local business structured data page, as read in October 2026.

Google lists name and address as required properties and asks you to include as many address properties as possible. Recommended properties include geo coordinates with at least five decimal places, opening hours as an openingHoursSpecification with opens, closes and day of week, a telephone number with country and area code, a working url, and a price range under 100 characters. Use the most specific business subtype that fits, and an array in the type field if more than one applies. Each location should be its own LocalBusiness.

Google notes that the markup can be added to any page, but it makes most sense on a page about your business. For a multi location brand, that means one location page per branch, each with its own markup, hours and phone number. Seasonal hours use valid from and valid through dates. Late hours that run past midnight stay in one hours specification.

The rule we add is that markup must match the visible page. If the page says closed on Friday afternoons, so must the data. Google also says in its guidance on AI features that no special markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Schema is for clarity and eligibility for classic features. It is not a switch. Our schema guide goes deeper.

  • Most specific subtype used
  • Hours in markup match the page and the profile
  • Geo coordinates accurate
  • One markup block per location page

Other profiles

Bing Places and Apple Business Connect: the quiet sources

Microsoft Copilot and other tools may touch these.

A trade news report on the October 2025 launch of the new Bing Places for Business said it moved to bing.com/forbusiness and added an import flow from Google Business Profile with instant verification, plus agency accounts for managing client listings. If you already keep a Google profile in good order, importing is a fast way to start a Bing listing, then you review every field because imports can carry old data. Our page on Copilot SEO explains why Bing data matters for that engine.

Apple Business Connect lets a business manage how it appears in Apple apps. We include it when your buyers are on iPhones, which is common in the UAE, USA and UK. Details of each program change, so we read the current help pages at the start of the work.

The principle is simple. Every profile should say the same true things. We keep a master fact sheet with name, address, phone, hours, categories, services, languages and website URL. Every profile and the website read from that sheet.

  • Master fact sheet signed off
  • Bing listing claimed or imported and reviewed
  • Apple listing checked where relevant
  • Differences between profiles logged and fixed

Run it today

A local GEO checklist you can run in an afternoon

  1. 1

    Write one fact sheet

Name, address, phone, hours, categories, services and website, exactly as they should appear everywhere.

  2. 2

    Compare your profiles

Open Google Business Profile, Bing Places and any directory listing. Mark every field that differs from the sheet.

  3. 3

    Open your location page

Does it state the address, hours, services, how to find you and two or three real local questions with answers?

  4. 4

    Check reviews

Read your latest ten reviews. Note common praise and common complaints. Reply to any that are unanswered.

  5. 5

    Test local prompts

Ask three AI tools for the best provider of your service in your area, with and without the word near me. Record who is named and what is said.

  6. 6

    Fix the cheapest fault first

Wrong hours or a wrong phone number is usually the quickest win.

Worked example

Example, hypothetical: a Dubai dental clinic

Imagine a dental clinic in Dubai with a storefront, three dentists and patients who ask in English and Arabic. Someone asks an AI tool for a dentist for a child in a named area of Dubai. The clinic is not mentioned. This is an invented scenario to show the work, not a result.

In week 1 we compare the profile, the website and two directories. The profile name includes a service keyword, the website lists a different Friday time, and there is a second profile for an old address. In week 2 we correct the name to the one on the signage, merge or request removal of the duplicate, align hours, and add LocalBusiness markup with a dentist subtype. In week 3 we rewrite the clinic page and the paediatric dentistry page so each opens with a direct answer, lists the dentists and their registered qualifications as supplied by the clinic, explains how to find the clinic from a nearby landmark, and answers six questions parents really ask. Medical advice stays with the dentists. In week 4 we retest the same prompts.

Worked example
Buyer asksDentist for a child in a named area of Dubai
  • paediatric dentistry clinic
  • clinic address and hours
  • how to find it from a landmark
  • dentists and registered qualifications
Engine answersClinics whose profile, website and directories agree are safer for an engine to name.
Invented scenario from this page, not a result.

Limits

What we cannot control

We cannot make an engine recommend you for a place. We cannot change what Google or any other platform shows in a map pack. Competitors may simply have more reviews or a longer history in the area.

Profiles can also be suspended or edited by the platform. If this happens we help you document and appeal, but outcomes sit with the platform.

Where we can help is the part under your control: accurate data, honest reviews and clear local pages. For the wider method see generative engine optimization, and for market detail see our pages for the UAE, the USA and the UK.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can you get us recommended by ChatGPT locally?

We cannot promise that. We can make sure your details, profiles and pages are clear and consistent, then test local prompts before and after so you can see what changed.

Is a Google Business Profile enough?

It is the base layer for many local questions, but engines also read your website, reviews and other sources. A clean profile with a thin or contradictory site still leaves gaps.

Do you work with service area businesses with no storefront?

Yes. Rules differ for them, so we follow the platform guidelines for service area businesses and describe the areas you really serve on your pages.

Will you write reviews for us?

No. Fake or incentivised reviews break platform rules and damage trust. We help you ask real customers and reply well.

Do you cover Arabic queries in the UAE?

The Pilot covers one domain and one language. Arabic and English together is possible as scoped follow on work. We can still test the prompts you name.

Does this work for a business with several branches?

Yes. We check each profile and location page for unique detail and consistent facts. The Pilot rewrites up to 10 priority pages, so we choose together which locations come first.

What does it cost?

The GEO Pilot is $999, fixed, one time, delivered inside 30 days. Ongoing work after that is quoted.

Should a service area business show its address?

Google's guidelines say service area businesses that do not serve customers at their location should hide the address and set a service area. Hybrid businesses that receive customers at a staffed location can show it.

Does LocalBusiness schema make AI engines recommend me?

No. Google says no special markup is required for its AI features, and markup guarantees nothing. It helps machines read your name, address, hours and phone accurately, which supports every other signal.

How many categories should my business profile have?

Google advises the fewest that describe your core business and as specific as possible. Do not use categories as keywords. We pick a primary category with you based on what you most want to be found for.
