    What it is

    FAQPage markup in plain words

FAQPage is a type from schema.org. It tells a machine that a page contains a list of questions, each with one accepted answer. It is normally written as JSON LD in the page head or body.

Each entry has a question name and an answer text. The generator builds that structure and escapes quotes and line breaks for you, which is where hand written JSON usually breaks.

Markup does not create content. It labels content that already exists. If the questions are not on the page, the markup has nothing to describe, and that is where trouble starts.

    The honest picture

What Google shows today, and what it does not

Set your expectations before you add anything.

In 2023, Google reduced FAQ rich results, and industry reports say it has since ended them. For most commercial sites, adding FAQ markup no longer produces the expandable question list in results.

Google also says that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no special schema requirement. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, like any other page.

That does not make the markup useless. It is still a clean, standard description of your page that other tools and parsers may read. Just do not promise a visible result to anyone, including yourself.

    The rules that matter

Three rules for FAQ markup you can defend

    Rule 1

The markup must match the visible text

Every question and answer in your JSON LD must appear on the page for people to read, in the same wording. Marking up hidden or different text breaks Google guidelines and can lead to the markup being ignored or a manual action.

The easiest way to comply is to write the visible FAQ first and generate the markup from the same copy.

    • Same wording in both places
    • No hidden questions

    Rule 2

    Write FAQs for readers first

A good FAQ answers the questions buyers really ask, in the first sentence, in plain words. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets and search suggestions rather than inventing them.

Answers of forty to ninety words read well and are easy to quote. Long essays are not.

    Rule 3

Use it only where a real FAQ exists

Do not put the same FAQ on every page. Mark up a FAQ on the page where it truly belongs, once. Repeating one block across a whole site adds nothing and looks careless.

Avoid promotional answers. An FAQ that is only an advert is poor for readers and poor for machines.

    How to use it

Add FAQ schema to a page in six steps

    1. 1

      Write the visible FAQ

Add the questions and answers to the page as normal readable text first.

    2. 2

      Paste into the tool

Use Q: and A: lines with a blank line between pairs, copying the exact wording.

    3. 3

      Generate the JSON LD

Copy the output. Check that the count of questions matches the page.

    4. 4

      Add it to the page

Place it in a script tag of type application/ld+json in the head or body, or use your CMS schema field.

    5. 5

      Validate

Test with the Schema.org validator and the Google Rich Results Test. Fix errors and review warnings.

    6. 6

      Recheck after edits

Whenever you change the page text, regenerate the markup so the two never drift apart.

    Mistakes

FAQ schema mistakes we see often

Marking up text that is not on the page

The most serious issue. If readers cannot see it, do not mark it up.

Copying one FAQ across every page

It adds noise, not value, and may be treated as spam.

    Using FAQ markup for adverts

Answers that push a product or offer break the spirit of the guideline.

    Broken JSON

An unescaped quote or stray comma invalidates the whole block. The generator handles this for you.

    Promising rich results

No one can promise one, and for most sites Google no longer shows them.

    When to use it

When to use the FAQ schema generator, and when not to

Use the generator when a page already has a real FAQ that people can read, and you want the matching FAQPage markup without writing JSON by hand. Typical pages are a service page with five to nine buyer questions, a pricing page with a short list of cost questions, a product page with delivery and returns questions, and a guide that ends with a question block.

Do not use it to create content. The tool labels text that exists. If the questions are not on the page, write and publish them first. Do not use it for a page with a single question, for a forum thread where users supply the answers, or for a block of questions that exist only to carry keywords. Those cases fit other markup types or none at all.

Be clear about the purpose. Google announced a reduction of FAQ rich results on its Search Central blog in August 2023 and has since phased them out. For most business sites the expandable result will not appear. The honest reasons to add the markup are clarity, a clean description of your page for any parser that reads it, and discipline: it forces you to keep the visible FAQ tidy and in sync with the data.

    Step by step

How to use every feature of the generator

    1. 1

      Write the visible FAQ first

Publish the questions and answers on the page as normal text. Aim for the questions buyers truly ask, with a direct first sentence in every answer.

    2. 2

Add pairs one at a time or paste in bulk

Each item has a question box and an answer box. You can also paste a block into the bulk import box using lines that begin with Q: and A:. Words such as Question and Answer work too, and the separator can be a colon, a full stop or a bracket. A line that follows an answer with no label is joined to that answer.

    3. 3

      Reorder and remove

Use the up and down arrows to match the order on your page. Use the cross to delete an item. The example button fills two sample questions so you can see the output.

    4. 4

Watch the notes under the output

The tool warns when an item has only a question or only an answer, because it is left out. It warns when a question repeats, and when an answer contains HTML tags, which are kept as plain text.

    5. 5

      Choose the wrapper

A tick box controls whether the output is wrapped in a script tag with type application/ld+json. Leave it on if you will paste into a theme or template. Turn it off if your CMS has a field that wants only the JSON.

    6. 6

      Copy and paste

Paste the block into the page that shows the FAQ. The tool escapes the closing slash in any closing tag so that an answer cannot end the script early.

    7. 7

      Validate

Run the page through the Schema Markup Validator and Google's Rich Results Test. Fix errors. Read warnings. Then compare the count of questions in the markup with the count on the page.

    Reading the output

What the generated JSON LD contains

The output is a single object. It declares the schema.org context, sets the type to FAQPage and holds a list called mainEntity. Each list item has the type Question, a name that holds the question text, and an acceptedAnswer of the type Answer with a text property that holds the answer.

That is the minimum Google documents for the type, and the tool adds nothing else. It trims leading and trailing spaces from each question and answer. It keeps the order you set. It skips any item missing a question or an answer. The count line beside the output shows how many complete items made it in, and a valid JSON badge appears when there is at least one.

Answers are stored as plain text. If you paste HTML, the tags remain as characters in the string and are not rendered as formatting. Simple sentences are safest. If your visible answers include a link or a list, the markup may differ slightly from what readers see, and that is a reason to keep answers short and plain.

If your page already has other structured data, such as an Organization or Article block, you can keep them as separate script blocks. You can also place the FAQPage items in the same graph. The generator outputs a standalone block, so merging into a graph is manual.

    Matching rules

The match between markup and page, in practice

Google's structured data guidelines say markup must describe content that is visible to users. The FAQ content guidelines add that the whole question and the whole answer should be on the page, and that advertising is not a valid use. Treat the visible text as the master copy and the markup as a mirror.

The simplest control is process. Keep the question and answer text in one place, such as a spreadsheet or the CMS FAQ fields. Generate the markup from that source each time you publish a change. Never edit the JSON by hand without editing the page, and never edit the page without regenerating the JSON.

A common drift happens when a marketing team edits the visible answer to update a price or a timeline, and nobody touches the JSON. The markup then states the old price. Search systems, and people who read the source, see a mismatch. Put a line in your editing checklist: FAQ changed, markup regenerated.

If an accordion hides answers until clicked, the text is still on the page, and that is normally acceptable. Make sure the answer text is in the HTML and is not loaded only after a click that calls a script. Our guide to schema markup for AI search covers more types and the same matching principle.

    Acting on the result

What to do when the validator says something

Two tools give two kinds of feedback. Read both.

    Valid, no warnings

The syntax is correct. This does not mean Google will show a rich result, and for most sites it will not. Check only that the text matches the page and that the page is indexed.

    Valid with warnings

Read each one. A warning about a recommended property usually changes nothing for FAQ markup. A warning about a duplicate item means a question appears twice, so remove one.

    Errors

Usually a stray character, a missing quote or a pasted fragment that broke the block. Regenerate from the tool, copy the whole output, and paste again over the old block.

    Common mistakes

Mistakes to avoid with FAQ markup

Adding it for a promised snippet

No one can promise an FAQ rich result, and Google has phased them out. Add the markup for structure, not for a snippet.

Marking up answers that are adverts

An answer that only pushes an offer breaks the intent of the guideline and does not help a reader. Answer the question, then mention the offer lightly if needed.

Copying one FAQ to every page

Repeating one block across a site adds no value and is hard to keep accurate. Write questions specific to each page.

Pasting inside the visible text area

Markup pasted into a rich text editor can appear as readable code on the page. Use a code block, a schema field or your theme's head area.

Letting two plugins output the same FAQ

An SEO plugin and a block editor can each add an FAQPage block, so the page carries two. Check the source and keep one.

    Not retesting after a redesign

A new theme can remove or duplicate the script. Test a sample page after every template change.

    Limits

What this tool and this markup cannot tell you

The generator checks only its own output. It does not read your page, so it cannot confirm that the markup matches what you published. It does not tell you whether the page is indexed, whether the questions are good, or whether your answers are accurate.

FAQ markup does not make an AI engine cite you. Google's documentation on AI features says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. We have not found OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity documentation that makes FAQ markup a condition of citation. What helps more is a crawlable page whose visible answers are clear, specific and true.

It also does not decide which questions matter. Finding them takes research into the prompts buyers type and the follow up questions engines generate. Our guides on researching buyer prompts and answer engine optimization explain how to do that.

Finally, the tool covers one type. HowTo, Product, Article, Organization and LocalBusiness data each have their own rules, and some belong on pages where an FAQ does not.

    FAQ

    FAQ schema questions

Will FAQ schema give me a rich result in Google?

Probably not. Google reduced FAQ rich results in 2023 and has since phased them out. Most commercial sites will not see them, even with valid markup. Add it for clarity and structure, not for a visible snippet.

Does FAQ schema help me appear in AI Overviews or ChatGPT?

There is no confirmed benefit. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special schema beyond normal SEO. Clear visible answers on a crawlable, indexed page matter far more than the markup itself.

Must the schema match the text on the page?

Yes. Every question and answer in the markup must appear as visible text on the page. Marking up content users cannot see goes against Google guidelines and can cause the markup to be ignored or lead to a manual action.

Where do I put the JSON LD?

In a script tag with type application/ld+json, in the head or the body of the page that holds the FAQ. Many CMS plugins and themes have a field for it. Test the page after you add it.

How many questions should I include?

Include the questions a buyer really asks, usually five to nine per page. There is no required number. Quality matters more than count, and each answer should stand on its own in forty to ninety words.

Should I add the same FAQ to every page?

No. Mark up an FAQ on the page where it truly belongs. Repeating a block sitewide adds no value, may look like spam and is hard to keep accurate. Write specific questions for each page.

Can I use the generator for questions in Arabic?

Yes. The output is Unicode text and keeps Arabic characters as typed. Make sure the page language and the markup language match, and that the visible Arabic text is identical to the question and answer text you paste. Right to left display is a page matter and does not change the JSON.

How many questions should one page have?

There is no required number. Five to nine real questions is typical for a service page. Add only questions that a buyer asks about that page. If you are padding to reach a number, stop.

Should the answer in the markup be shorter than the visible one?

No. Use the same text. If the visible answer is long, shorten the page copy so that both are the same and still useful. Differences invite the mismatch problem.

Does FAQ schema help voice or AI assistants?

There is no confirmed evidence that it does. Assistants may read the visible text of a page directly. Markup is a clean description of the same content, not a guarantee of use.

What is the difference between FAQPage and QAPage?

FAQPage is for a page where the site owner supplies one answer to each question. QAPage is for a page where one question gets multiple user submitted answers, such as a forum thread. Use FAQPage for your own FAQ.

Can I generate the markup for a page I do not control?

You can produce the JSON, but it should only go on a page that shows those questions and answers. Publishing markup for text that is not on the page, or on a page you do not own, is not appropriate and may be ignored.
